    2-semiarcs in PG(2, q), q <= 13

    A 2-semiarc is a pointset S-2 with the property that the number of tangent lines to S-2 at each of its points is two. Using some theoretical results and computer aided search, the complete classification of 2-semiarcs in PG(2, q) is given for q <= 7, the spectrum of their sizes is determined for q <= 9, and some results about the existence are proven for q = 11 and q = 13. For several sizes of 2-semiarcs in PG(2, q), q <= 7, classification results have been obtained by theoretical proofs

    Digital mammography, cancer screening: Factors important for image compression

    Get PDF
    The use of digital mammography for breast cancer screening poses several novel problems such as development of digital sensors, computer assisted diagnosis (CAD) methods for image noise suppression, enhancement, and pattern recognition, compression algorithms for image storage, transmission, and remote diagnosis. X-ray digital mammography using novel direct digital detection schemes or film digitizers results in large data sets and, therefore, image compression methods will play a significant role in the image processing and analysis by CAD techniques. In view of the extensive compression required, the relative merit of 'virtually lossless' versus lossy methods should be determined. A brief overview is presented here of the developments of digital sensors, CAD, and compression methods currently proposed and tested for mammography. The objective of the NCI/NASA Working Group on Digital Mammography is to stimulate the interest of the image processing and compression scientific community for this medical application and identify possible dual use technologies within the NASA centers

    Analysis of navigation pattern in the sport of rowing

    The effect of weather and environmental conditions on sports has been extensively studied over the last few years (Pezzoli et al., 2010). Based upon the studies of Lobozewicz (1981) and of Kay and Vamplew (2002), Pezzoli and Cristofori (2008) have studied the impact of some specific environmental parameters over different sports using a particular impact index divided into five classes. This analysis clearly shows that most of the outdoor sport activities are strongly influenced by the variation of meteorological parameters. However the impact of meteorological conditions on outdoor sport activities has not yet been extensively studied. The aim of this research is to show that an accurate assessment of wind and wave parameters enables decisive improvements in both training and race strategy planning. Furthermore this analysis provide a very innovative working method for the applied sport research. The work has been based on in-situ measurements of both environmental and performance parameters (wind direction, wind velocity, boat speed and stroke rate) made over different classes and in different race conditions during the 2009 FISA World Championship (Poznan, Poland). In particular a detailed environmental analysis was performed by measuring the wind direction, the wind speed and by evaluating the significant wave height and the wave peak period for each class during the semi-final phase and the final phase. It should be noted that, since wind is a key parameter affecting not only the boat speed but also the race strategy, the assessment of the wind velocity and of the wind direction has been made in connection with the boat movement. The comparison between coupled wind-wave data, boat speed and stroke rate evidently demonstrates that only crews that managed the adaption to changing in the environmental conditions from semi-final to final phase of the race, were able to get better results. In this progress report, the ninth of the joint research CON1 - ENEA - FILPJ, after a thermodynamic approach-to the human body machine, the first application heat-exchange equation during a physical working period is carried out. The study is performed during "positive" and "negative work thermodynamical cycles, and the main result is analyzed and compared with experimental results

    A MACHINE LEARNING APPROACH TO MULTISPECTRAL SATELLITE DERIVED BATHYMETRY

    Abstract. Bathymetry in coastal environment plays a key role in understanding erosion dynamics and evolution along coasts. In the presented investigation depth along the shore-line was estimated using different multispectral satellite data. Training and validation data derived from a traditional bathymetric survey developed along transects in Cesenatico; measured data were collected with a single-beam sonar returning centimetric precision. To limit spatial auto-correlation training and validation dataset were built choosing alternatively one transect as training and another as validation. Each set was composed by a total of ~6000 points. To estimate water depth two methods were tested, Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF). The RF method provided the higher accuracy with a root mean square error value of 0.228 m and mean absolute error of 0.158 m, against values of 0.409 and 0.226 respectively for SVM. Results show that application of machine learning methods to predict depth near shore can provide interesting results that can have practical applications

    Death and Communal Mass-Mourning: Vin Diesel and the Remembrance of Paul Walker

    Get PDF
    This article examines Vin Diesel’s use of his public Facebook Page to mourn the loss of his friend and co-actor Paul Walker in the period from 2013-2015. It discusses how Vin Diesel performed his grief and how his mourning process was communally reflected and repeated by both Vin Diesel and Walker fans, who used Vin Diesel’s page to share and verbalise their own feelings of loss in a both public and safe space. An analysis of Vin Diesel’s own status updates and 1800 comments reacting to three popular status updates related to the death of Paul Walk posted over the course of more than a year show that commentary was used to make condolences to both Vin Diesel and Walker’s familes and to affectively express the users’ immediate feelings, both verbally and through the use of emojis. However, over time, both the form and intensity of expression of both Vin Diesel and his followers changed, pointing to the need to further study celebrity mourning processes on social media over extended periods of time

    Experimental probing of exchange interactions between localized spins in the dilute magnetic insulator (Ga,Mn)N

    Full text link
    The sign, magnitude, and range of the exchange couplings between pairs of Mn ions is determined for (Ga,Mn)N and (Ga,Mn)N:Si with x < 3%. The samples have been grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy and characterized by secondary-ion mass spectroscopy; high-resolution transmission electron microscopy with capabilities allowing for chemical analysis, including the annular dark-field mode and electron energy loss spectroscopy; high-resolution and synchrotron x-ray diffraction; synchrotron extended x-ray absorption fine-structure; synchrotron x-ray absorption near-edge structure; infra-red optics and electron spin resonance. The results of high resolution magnetic measurements and their quantitative interpretation have allowed to verify a series of ab initio predictions on the possibility of ferromagnetism in dilute magnetic insulators and to demonstrate that the interaction changes from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic when the charge state of the Mn ions is reduced from 3+ to 2+.Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures; This version contains the detailed characterization of the crystal structure as well as of the Mn distribution and charge stat
